New Zealand Parliament Speaker Warns of Sharp Rise in Threats Against Lawmakers

(MENAFN) Threats directed at New Zealand lawmakers have increased "astronomically" in recent years, prompting stronger security arrangements and closer coordination with police, Parliament Speaker Gerry Brownlee warned Tuesday.

Parliament’s Security Information, Risk and Advisory Service received 216 requests for assistance between Sept. 28 and Oct. 18, including 81 operational deployments, according to reports.

Parliamentary Service Chief Executive Rafael Gonzalez-Montero said the unit provides support to lawmakers attending public events, traveling and dealing with protests or threatening conduct.

He added that security operations had been expanded ahead of the upcoming election amid growing concerns about the safety of elected representatives.

Brownlee said hostility toward lawmakers had risen significantly over the past three years, leading to the introduction of what he described as the "strongest protocol we've ever had with the New Zealand Police."

He linked the increase in threats to economic pressures, public dissatisfaction and instability around the world. He also warned that social media platforms were amplifying abusive behavior and contributing to the problem.

The warning came after an attack on Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines, who was critically injured and lost a leg after allegedly being struck by a vehicle in Victoria. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident.

Brownlee cautioned that persistent intimidation could create distance between elected officials and the communities they represent, making it more difficult for lawmakers to engage directly with the public.

"Democracy is a relatively fragile thing," he said.

New Zealand authorities have declined to disclose details of individual threats, citing security considerations. The expanded protective measures reflect growing concern over the risks facing politicians as they carry out public duties and interact with constituents.
